Claiming Medicare Rebates: A Guide for Clients

At Therapist Connect, we want to make accessing psychological support as seamless as possible. If you’re eligible for Medicare rebates, this guide explains how they work and how you can claim them for your sessions with a registered psychologist.

What Are Medicare Rebates for Psychological Services?

Under the Better Access to Mental Health Care initiative, Medicare provides rebates for psychology sessions when you have a valid referral from a GP, psychiatrist, or pediatrician. These rebates can significantly reduce the cost of accessing mental health care, making support more affordable.

Who Is Eligible for Medicare Rebates?

To access rebates, you’ll need:

  1. A Mental Health Treatment Plan: Created by your GP, psychiatrist, or pediatrician during a consultation
  2. A Referral Letter: Addressed to a psychologist of your choice or left open for you to choose.

How Many Sessions Are Covered?

Medicare currently allows rebates for:

  • Up to 10 individual sessions per calendar year
  • An additional 10 group sessions, if recommended Addressed to a psychologist of your choice or left open for you to choose.

Initially, your GP will refer you for up to six sessions. After these, a review is required to access further sessions within the same year.

How Much Can I Claim?

The rebate amount depends on the type of psychologist and the service provided. As a guide:

  • Clinical Psychologists: Approximately $136 per session
  • Registered Psychologists: Approximately $92 per session

Your out-of-pocket costs will depend on the psychologist’s fees and the Medicare rebate
